As a manager, you probably know the daily challenges you and your team face to achieve results. Maybe you’re unhappy that you’re not achieving what you want, you feel pressured, and you pass that pressure on to your team, getting caught in a vicious cycle. You want to achieve those results, but not at any cost. You want to stay true to your values. Then you want to become proud of your achievements and enjoy your life more.
The Unlock the Way to Your Goals method is the result of my 40 years of experience and learning how to get the results you want and improve your personal satisfaction. I have practiced this approach in many seminars with managers of large companies and then adapted it to the way managers and entrepreneurs do their daily work, get results (or not) and feel good about it.
In 11 steps, you’ll move from your current stage of dissatisfaction for not achieving what you want to a new stage of pride in achieving your desired results and celebrating a job well done.
It all starts with a map. You need to familiarize yourself with your landscape and the paths available to you.
Get your feet on the ground, know your territory, and once you’re standing firm, look around, feel what’s happening around you, and try to make sense of it.
Look far in the direction of your purpose and be convinced your goals really point in that direction. Then decide on the places where you want to rest along the way. What separates you from your environment? What inputs from your environment do you let in and what do you ignore? What are you giving away to your environment?
Do you know which are the main tasks that lead you to the goals you want? Are you living in survival or fulfillment mode? Where do you think you fit best? How can you move from survival mode to fulfillment mode? It is very rare that we work in isolation. Are you investing time and effort in relationships with your colleagues?
Everything and everyone around you is part of your environment, including other people. The environment exerts a strong influence on you. To survive and thrive, do you recognize the needs of your environment and adapt to them?
What compass or navigation system do you have that tells you if you are going in the right direction?
If you are not happy with where you are today and the results you are getting, you have probably already decided that you need to change. Change always goes through three phases. You can’t avoid them. You must stop where you are, then try to stay in nowhere for as short a time as possible and move as quickly as possible to the new beginning where you envision what your life will look like when you achieve your desired results.
Just as you need feedback to determine if your results are appropriate for achieving your goal (are you doing things the right way), you need additional feedback to determine if your goal is still appropriate after your transformation to meet your clients’ needs.
The results you achieve are not random but happen for a reason. However, you can’t improve the results directly. The Unlock the Way to Your Goals model shows you the levers that are available to you to influence the results you achieve. If you work on these levers, you can improve your results.
This is the process that helps you understand why you are getting the results you are getting.
This process helps you figure out what you need to change to get the results you want.
Once you know what changes you need to make to your levers, all you must do is creating an action plan, deciding what steps you must take, implementing them, and enjoying your success.
If you did not achieve 100% what you wanted, you can repeat this process each time you decide to improve your results further. If your situation and environment don’t change (i.e., you don’t change companies or jobs within the company), you can go through the first steps much faster, and quickly begin the diagnosis in Step 9.
The more you practice the process, the more adept you will become at it, the faster you will improve your results, and the happier you will be.
If you have employees who report to you, you can also use the same process to assess their situation and help them improve their results (your results through them) and their (your) satisfaction.
